Taco Bell is heading back to Jersey City’s Journal Square neighborhood, just months after closing a nearby location. The chain has signed a lease to take space inside the Journal Square Transportation Center, right above the PATH trains and bus terminal, in a deal facilitated by GRID, which holds exclusive retail leasing rights for the property.
The new location will sit next to Starbucks and join a growing lineup of newer tenants in the complex, including Jollibee, Wendy’s, and Tsaocaa. It is aimed squarely at the commuters who pass through Journal Square every day, a group that made up much of the customer base for Taco Bell’s previous spot along Kennedy Boulevard just west of the transportation center.
A Familiar Brand Finds a New Home
Taco Bell already operates two other locations in Jersey City, one Downtown and one at the Twin City Shopping Center near the Bayonne border, so this marks a return to Journal Square rather than a first foray into the city. The brand clearly sees strong demand here, since it also has two more Jersey City locations in the pipeline. One is a late night location near the Holland Tunnel entrance approved by the Planning Board last summer, and another is planned for the ground floor of a project along Central Avenue in the Heights. All three locations are being developed by Yum & Chill Restaurant Group.
Continued Momentum at Journal Square
This lease adds to a steady run of leasing activity at the Journal Square Transportation Center, one of the busiest transit hubs in New Jersey. GRID continues to work through the retail lineup at the property, and while demand keeps building, there is still space available, most notably the former Emma’s restaurant space. For a location that sees millions of PATH riders and bus passengers every year, that kind of remaining availability is a real opportunity for the right tenant.
The return of a brand as recognizable as Taco Bell is another sign of how much confidence retailers have in Journal Square as a commuter-driven retail destination. Between the residential growth surrounding the station and the steady churn of foot traffic through the transportation center itself, it is easy to see why national brands keep coming back.
If you are interested in retail space at Journal Square or elsewhere in Jersey City, GRID’s leasing team can help.
