A multi-restaurant building just steps from the Grove Street PATH station is undergoing a major revamp and one space is slated to house a barbeque spot from a chef with vast experience in the field.
Earlier this year, construction work began inside a portion of the Grove Square complex at 116 Newark Avenue. The property has long been home to a slate of restaurants that have changed names and concepts over the years, but only the Grove Corner Bar will be remaining at the site.
Earlier this month, a company called 116 Newark Ave. Rest. Inc. applied to transfer a liquor license to the property. The entity, formed earlier this year, can be traced to the restaurant group that runs The Ashford and Six26 Lounge, both of which are just a short walk away.
A notice to Jersey City’s Alcoholic Beverage Control board states that the new endeavor will operate under the name Boots & Bones. A spokesperson for The Ashford confirmed to Jersey Digs that the restaurant will specialize in barbecue-style cuisine with Kenny Callaghan, who served as the original chef at New York City’s Blue Smoke, set to curate the menu.
Also partnering on the business is Jeff Lam, who helped design The Ashford and is a co-owner of NYC venues Chinese Tuxedo and The Tyger.
Boots & Bones have not yet released a menu and still need to win approvals to transfer a liquor license to the property, but construction has picked up at the storefront in recent weeks. Jersey City-based GRID Real Estate brokered the restaurant’s lease agreement.
While an opening date for the restaurant has not yet been announced, Boots & Bones should fill a hole in Newark Avenue’s dining scene when the business launches. The stretch notably lacks a barbeque joint and the future restaurant’s location next to the Grove Street PATH station all but guarantees them significant foot traffic.
