Former Jersey City Restaurant Building Being Auctioned Off This Week

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A building in Jersey City’s transforming Journal Square area that once held restaurants is being auctioned off this week.

Grid Commercial Real Estate said that the 6,800 square foot building, directly across from the Journal Square PATH Station, is currently vacant. It sits on a tenth of an acre with a parking lot.

Its most recent use was as Sanai’s Bar and Lounge, which closed.

The minimum bid is $350,000 and the owner will pay $28,000 in taxes annually, the agency said.

A story on Jersey Digs last year said the building dates back to the 17th century.

“Summit House was originally called the Newkirk House and built in 1690 by Mattheus Cornelissen Newkirk who had emigrated from the Netherlands
in 1659,” the story says. “The area was known as Bergen … The house was initially constructed as a one-story home with two-foot-thick walls of sandstone, limestone and mortar. Eight-inch wood pegs hold together the massive wood beams that frame the structure.”
